The Proven Race XC UD combines lightweight carbon rims, TaperLock UD carbon spokes, precision EZO bearings, and our fastest-engaging MTB hub system to create the lightest mountain bike wheelset we've ever produced.

Engineered in West Sussex and refined through UCI Cross-Country World Cup racing, every component was evaluated in pursuit of lower weight, reduced drag, and more direct power transfer. At 1254g, it feels quick to accelerate and immediate under power.

The Purpose.

At the highest level of cross-country racing, small details matter.

A lighter wheel accelerates faster and reduced rotational weight helps preserve momentum. Faster engagement reduces wasted crank movement, while stiffer spokes respond more directly to rider input. None of these gains are dramatic on their own. Put them together and they change how a bike feels over the course of a race, from the first hard acceleration to the final climb.

The Proven Race XC UD was developed around that principle and refined through UCI Cross-Country World Cup racing.

Rather than chasing a single headline number, development focused on the details that influence speed over a full race distance. Carbon UD spokes reduce mass while increasing stiffness. A 90T ratchet system minimises wasted movement at the pedals, while premium EZO bearings help preserve momentum over long race efforts.

Together, these details create a wheelset that feels quick to accelerate and eager to hold speed.

Note: best performance is usually gained by using tyre pressures lower than the maximum, you can see our blog post about this, read here. Tubeless-ready for lower weight and rolling resistance. Only use tyres marked as compatible with hookless (TSS) rims. You must not exceed the maximum tyre pressure limits set out in the table below or the maximum limit set by your tyre manufacturer if this is lower.

TaperLock UD Carbon Spokes

At just 2.7g per spoke, the TaperLock UD carbon spoke system is one of the largest contributors to the wheelset's exceptionally low overall weight.

Compared to steel spokes, the carbon construction exhibits 30% less extension under load, helping maintain accurate wheel tracking while contributing to a more direct connection between rider input and forward motion. Each spoke remains individually replaceable, ensuring long-term serviceability.

Nipples

Our lightweight alloy Taperlock nipples are designed to prevent the lightweight UD carbon spokes from twisting under harsh loads, ensuring equal tension from race to race.

S_RapidEngageHub System

The S_RapidEngage hub platform uses a precision-machined 90T ratchet ring to deliver 2° engagement.

By reducing the amount of crank rotation required before power reaches the trail, the system provides immediate response during technical climbs, sprint efforts, and repeated accelerations. Available with SRAM XD, Shimano Microspline, and HG freehub options.

Front & Rear Specific Carbon Rims

The Proven Race XC UD uses dedicated front and rear rim constructions weighing 348g and 369g respectively.

By tuning each rim independently, compliance and strength can be optimized according to the demands placed on each wheel. A 30mm internal width provides excellent tire support and stability across a wide range of terrain and conditions.

Stated wheel weights: Our stated wheel weights reflect the wheelset only; without rim tape, tubeless valves or disc brake lock rings, as is industry standard. A 3% variance (lower or higher) in total system weight is normal for wheelset manufacturing.

All HUNT wheels models have to pass our harsh rolling-drum fatigue tests for rider weight limits, please see here for more details. Max system weight 135 kg (system weight – total weight of fully kitted up rider, bike and luggage). If the system is over 125 kg then an experienced bike mechanic should check the wheel regularly.
