MASON x HUNT Search 29 Dynamo Disc Wheelset

Made for how you ride
Enhanced to perfectly compliment your riding, the Search 29 Dynamo Disc is for those "Josh" type of riders. Just pack your bags and enjoy complete freedom without boundaries.

Tubeless Tyres Fitted
Gain the most out of your riding with a set of tubeless Maxxis or Schwalbe Tyres fitted and set up tubeless with sealant ready to roll straight out of the box.

Weight
The consequence of the fanatic attention to detail is incredible durability and a resulting low 2165g wheelset weight.

Bearings
Bearings are the heart of any wheel and investing in them makes huge sense so we went to Japanese bearing experts EZO and invested extra to spec their high-grade precision sealed cartridge bearings in our full range.

Freehub Body
Choose between SRAM/Shimano 8/9/10/11 or SRAM XD to be fitted to your Search 29 Wheels. Each freehub features six individual MultiPawls to ensure strong engagement, even in the grimmest conditions.

Nipples
We have chosen top of the line, triple butted Pillar Spokes with increased reinforcement at the spoke head. Not only are these spokes extremely lightweight, they are also able to provide a greater degree of elasticity when put under increased stress. The Pillar Spoke Reinforcement (PSR) puts more material at the spoke head, just before the J-Bend to prevent failure in this stress area.

Rims
The Search 29 rim includes details which are high on the durability factor to make sure you finish every ride with a big grin. The 6069-T6 (+69% tensile strength vs 6061-T6) alloy rim sticks with the wider-is-better mantra. Designed for 2.3"-2.5" tyres, the wide 30mm (internal) rim provides support to the tyre during hard cornering, landing in a root strewn shoot or when your throttling down a high-speed section and folding a tyre is the last thing you need to happen!

Rim Profile
Like all of our wheels, the Hunt MTB line-up is designed to be used as a tubeless system. Featuring a H-Lock rim bead with 'up-kicks' to the shoulders of the rim bed secures your tyre when seated. This prevents side-to-side movement reducing the chance of burping your tyre. It creates a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tyres. Still haven't made the switch? All our wheels are tube compatible as well.

The Purpose

We've been working with Mason Progressive Cycles since our very first wheelset, and we're thrilled to announce the Search 29 Dynamo Disc, our fourth collaborative effort. The wheelset is designed to perfectly accompany Mason's new InSearchOf. Read More

'Covering huge distances and riding fast across every imaginable terrain is the territory of the radical new InSearchOf. The full custom Mason X Dedacciai steel tubeset gives incredible ride quality and feedback with multiple mounting points and huge clearance for high volume tyres'

The Mason x HUNT Search 29 Dynamo Disc wheelset is the result. It features all of the fine details you’d come to expect from us, including our rough-ready Trail Wide MTB rim, extra sealed and shielded 4 Season Disc rear hub, and a seriously durable high 32-spoke build (of Pillar's light and extremely strong triple-butted PSR spokes). Even with the extra weight of the dynamo hub, this wheelset is still lighter than many disc-brake wheels fitted to bikes as original equipment.

For the Mason x HUNT Search 29 Dynamo Disc wheelset, we collaborated once more with SON (Schmidt Original Nabendynamo). We have long been aware of just how highly regarded SON are for their durability and performance. Wilfred Schmidt is incredibly passionate about dynamos, so our chats with him excited our inner geek. Wilfred and his team have been engineering their dynamo hubs in Germany since their first prototype 25 years ago.

A dynamo hub is a an ingenious idea, a small coil of copper wire that spins inside a group of magnets to produce electricity, effectively it is an electric motor in reverse. You can then connect up electric devices such as lights, and never need to worry about having to abandon your ride due to lack of light. Following a large number of requests for a dynamo wheelset, our HUNT began for a lightweight and durable wheelset that provides you with freedom from constant charging of lights for your on and off-road bike-pack adventures, fast commuting and daily winter training.

SON dynamos are renowned for their market-leading efficiency. When your light is drawing power (light switched on) the efficiency of a SON hub is an impressive 65%, so at the German testing standard of 3 watts / 6 volt dynamo output (11-12 mph with the SON 28) just 4.6 watts of your rolling power is used. Of course the light is always available, so no realising you forgot to charge and having to abandon your ride.

With the light off/unplugged (e.g. daylight riding) the graph below shows that for the SON 28 there is less than half a watt extra rolling resistance compared to a high quality normal non-dynamo hub. For a bit of context; for a 1 hour commute fast training ride, as very amateur cyclists here at HUNT, we would expect to produce somewhere between 160-300 watts average depending on our weight and level of fitness. SON Dynamo graph

The deep thought and detail that goes into every SONdynamo sits well with our philosophy to HUNT for improvements in even the smallest details. The connectors used by SON are a great example; they are universal spade connectors available from most electrical retailers/suppliers/hardware stores rather than a connector that is unique to the hub design. This means that if the connector is lost or damaged far from home finding parts will be a whole lot easier.

Dynamo specific AC power charging devices or lights (Exposure Revo) are required to work with dynamo hubs.

SON 28 | Highly efficient, faster and lower weight.

Drop-bar road and adventure bikes are designed for going fast, whereas many dynamo hubs were designed for town bikes. The rapid advancement and incredible efficiency of LED lighting compared to older halogen bulbs has meant that lights such as the Exposure Revo (available as a package with these wheels - please click here) would run at its whopping 800 lumen output at just 10mph. SON realised that by using a smaller/lighter generator, they could reduce drag by an impressive 20% and still achieve the 3 watt / 6 volt output (800 lumens on the Revo light) at just 11-12mph. Even at 10mph, you will get upwards of 500 lumens from the Exposure Revo light! The super-fast SON 28 is the result of this innovative thinking... 20% better rolling resistance and lower weight, only 480g.

      5 Year Warranty (incl. Bearings)

The unique SON Pressure Compensation System allows us to offer a you huge 5 year warranty on the SON Dynamo hubs including bearing wear.

      SON Pressure Compensation System

All dynamos heat slightly during operation and then cool, the cooling of air in the hub body of most dynamo hubs can cause lowering air pressure inside the hub. This lower air pressure can lead to suction of water through the bearing seals significantly reducing the life of hub bearings. However, SON dynamos feature their unique Pressure Compensation System which consists of an air flow port on the axle cap and inside the axle (as shown below) and an air reservoir tube.

      SON Dynamo Pressure Compensation Port

The SON Pressure Compensation System allows air pressure to be equalised, thus extending bearing life to a huge 50,000-100,000 kms. The tube (shown below) is long enough that water doesn't reach the end, and when the dynamo heats up again air pressure increases and any air and water is forced back out of the axle end of the tube preventing damage.

      Exposure Revo 800 lumens

Low Weight, High Convenience - 800 Lumen Exposure Revo"

Exposure Lights tried, tested and much loved dynamo powered light. Providing up to 800 lumens of power that is only limited by your endurance, it is the new must have for adventure riding, touring and commuting. Plus it's manufactured just down the road from us here in Sussex, UK.

The Exposure Revo Dynamo light weighs a feathery 110g as it needs no battery, so as a package the light and hub weigh much the same as a normal hub and battery powered light, without that "oh, my lights run out of charge... I can't ride" nightmare.

Up to 1 hour of light even when your bike is stopped!

Stand Light Technology | When you stop, the Revo’s Stand Light provides ten minutes of light at 400 lumens running for up to an hour at a diminishing level. The retained energy allows you to quickly get up to full power when you start cycling again or get your tent up for a night in the wilderness.

      Tubeless Tyre Fitting Options

Schwalbe Hans Dampf Snake Skin Tubeless Tyres

Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35" Snake Skin Soft Front / Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35" Snake Skin Speed Grip Rear

The Hans Dampf is one of the most balanced tyres out there. Providing superior control on rough terrain as well as amazing grip in flowy singletrack, the Hans Dampf is the best kind of all-rounder. The high-volume casing offers maximum braking traction and cornering grip for when the trail becomes aggressive. But when gravity stops working its magic, the Hans Dampf will not leave you behind. The continuous tread pattern is closely spaced meaning that this tyre tracks well and has a lower rolling resistance over more aggressive options.

Choose this tyre combo for your TrailWide wheels if you want an all-round option for your aggressive XC or trail bike. We love this tyre when the trails are a little dryer and demand a faster rolling option.

Maxxis High Roller II and Ardent Tubeless Tyres Combo

Maxxis High Roller II 2.4" EXO Front / Maxxis High Roller II 2.4" EXO Rear

If you have been riding a trail/enduro bike chances are your go to tyre is the Maxxis High Roller II. An iconic tyre chosen by riders due to its ability to perform in most conditions, it is one to reach for when you’re wanting a tyre you know will won’t having you second guessing yourself. The open and aggressive tread design gives the High Roller II excellent soil penetration and mud clearing ability. The High Roller II provides a solid consistent feeling when transitioning from the intermediate to the outmost knobs when cornering. The centre knobs provide great traction when braking and giving oodles of traction when the trails demand it.

Choose this tyre combo for loose to wet conditions where an intermediate/wet tyre will be overkill. It’s our go to tyre when we are heading off on a weekend riding trip one week and ripping our local trails the next.

      • Son Dynamo

Up to 1 hour of light even when your bike is stopped!

Stand Light Technology | When you stop, the Revo’s Stand Light provides ten minutes of light at 400 lumens running for up to an hour at a diminishing level.

"With the Trail Wide being upgraded to a tougher alloy, and with only a slight increase in weight I believe that they are going to prove to be one of the best sub £400 wheelsets on the market for some time to come. They look classy, the quality is spot on and they keep rolling even when they’ve been battered."
